Fashion Photography: Where Are The Women Of Color

Things have been crazy for me the last few weeks that I have so been slipping on my posting. My apologies as I don’t mean to leave any of you all hanging. It’s actually a two fold issue that I have going on: I’ve been crazy busy and I haven’t been all too inspired by any one thing or things as of late. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a lover of all things art whether on a canvas, photography or performance.

I spent a little time looking at fashion photography this afternoon and it it did re-energize my battery a little. Take a looksie at a few images I uncovered that I found pretty beautiful. I will say this. I’m feeling some kind of way about the lack of women of cover when I did a search of fashion photography. Should I really have to do a narrowed search of “asian fashion photography” or “African American fashion photography” just to find what I’m looking for? Oh and let me just say that a search of “African American fashion photography” didn’t publish any real results. *sighs*

I’m the type of person who believes ALL cultures and nationalities are beautiful (anyone who knows me would vouch for me) so excuse me while I vent… Be sure to comment and express your thoughts on the lack of representation of women of color. I’m not just talking African American women, I mean all women of color.

Picture Perfect: Scarlett Johansson for Mango

I’ve been into photography since my aunt gave me my first camera when I was about 7, 8 or whatever age kids are in the 3rd grade. It was a hot pink and purple Le Clic camera that took 110 film. I’m sure I have a picture of it somewhere. As I clearly have this thing for all things fashion, fashion photography is very appealing to me. The Scarlett Johansson for Mango shots are absolutely stunning. I’ve featured items from Mango from time to time, so if you’re unfamiliar, you should definitely check the line out. The clothes are all very reasonably priced and you’re sure to find things great for work and play from cute dresses to jeans for weekends out shopping with friends.

Artistic Interpretation: Pink’s Glitter In The Air Grammy Performance

If know that every gossip blog sites will be covering Who Wore What to the Grammy’s and let me be perfectly honest…I get completely sick and tired of the same posts over and over so I’ll spare you, my awesome readers. By now, everyone knows what Beyonce, Gaga and Taylor wore. We all had the text message, twitter and live conversations last night, so there’s really no sense in rehashing it.

Although Sole Intuition is all about insight and style, as I’ve mentioned before I am equally as passionate about music and art. When all are fused together, it’s the perfect blend of creativity, intuition and soul. My favorite performance of the awards show was Pink’s visual interpretation of Glitter in the Air (Funhouse, 2009). It was so artistic and captivating. For that reason, I’m giving Pink a “Following Your Intuition” stamp for approval. So this is my Grammy coverage. Short, sweet and to the point. Loves it!

I love taking fun, girly quizzes so you all will see them from time to time. The “What Fashion Capital Are You?” quiz was fun and I think my results were right on. Apparently, I’m “New York”. Even though I have tons of clothes and shoes in my wardrobe, I do tend to gravitate towards a few items more than others. But then again, everyone does that, right?

The Price Of Style: How Much Is Too Much?

Everyone has an idea of how much they’re willing to spend on fashion. For some, there’s no way they’d ever part with much cash when it comes to buying something new. Others, let’s just say that some people are willing to live off of Ramen Noodles for the sake of red soled heels. I’m pretty much middle of the road. I’d pay a few hundred, but nothing more than that. My stipulation is that if it’s a shoe, it must be something I can get a lot of wear out of. I’m the same way with clothes – staple pieces should be pricier. I’d like to hear from you all: how much is too much? What are you willing to spend? The Best Styled Shows, Period: What Are Your Picks?

When I think about television shows I either watch now, when I growing up or catch on Nick at Nite or TVLand, the fashion is what always stands out. Remember Kelly Bundy’s skin tight body dresses or DeWayne Wayne’s V-neck cardigan sweaters with the sleeves pushed up? Maybe those aren’t the best examples of timeless style, but I can think of a few shows, or individual characters, that basically make me drool.

Gossip Girl
No one can deny that the cast of Gossip Girl are perhaps the best styled teens in the history of television. I mean, really! My friends and I thought we looked pretty fly during those teen years, but Blair,Sabrina and the rest of the crew are fashion mavens.

The Cosby Show
How will ever forget when Denise attempted to make Theo the Gordan Gartrell shirt. Throughout the eight seasons of the show, the Cosby kids was a source of style inspiration for lots of American families.

Mary Tyler Moore
Even though Mary Tyler Moore stopped its original shows before I was born, I still caught up with the show on Nick at Nite as a child. Sidebar: Am I the only one that misses the REAL, by real I mean the early 90sm Nick at Nite. So much classic television. Two words: hat toss.

Girlfriends – I couldn’t really add them to the list because this cast went through some changes. I have the series on DVD and I never realized that in the first two seasons, especially the first, how often the characters repeated the same outfits. In season one, Joan and that dang turtleneck. I think her boyfriend Sean only had two outfits and he loved that red sweater. I do have to take into account that as the show progressed, the styling got better, but there was never a point in time that the entire cast was “on point” at the same time…blame Lynn.

Is this a comprehensive list? No, but these are shows that instantly stand out in my mind. Granted, I can’t very well include shows that I’ve never watched like Ugly Betty or Weeds. What would be some of your picks? Be sure to comment and let me know.

What Are You Supposed To Do With The Free Gift With Purchase Bag Anyway?

I received new perfume (Marc Jacobs Lola and Jessica Simpson Fantasy to be exact) upon returning from my holiday vacation. Along with the perfume, I got several freebies, one of which included the Guess bag below. It’s really cute but I always find myself wondering what I should do with it. The other night on Twitter, several people, including myself, started an#unfashionable hashtag. There were lots of completely hilarious ones and a few people seemed to get a kick out of mine: “Using the free w/purchases gift as a handbag = unfashionable.”

Which leads to be the question. Exactly what are you supposed to do with the free gifts with purchase? Be sure to comment and let me know your suggestions.

Just Because I Have Big Feet Doesn’t Mean I Don’t Want To Be Stylish

I could not be more happy than when I read the post on Glamour’s website, Got Big Feet? This Shoe-palooza’s For You. You have no idea (unless you’re in the big feet club) how much of a disappointment it is to always find hot shoes that you know aren’t available in your size. I have a few go to brands because I can always find a 12 – Nine West, Vaneli, Dollhouse and a few reasonably priced others. I am all about supporting designers to realize that style goes beyond a siez 10 shoe. Hats off to all who take notice. For higher end labels, Nordstroms and Bloomingdale’s have us covered. I Am Thankful For Thomas Hancock (You Know, The Guy Who Invented Elastic)

I was going back and forth as usual trying to decided on what to wear today. I brought enough clothes to the parents house to give everyone a minimum of five wardrobe changes. I don’t think that’s too much, do you? I’m not one of those people who’s an absolute glutton and shoves enough food down my mouth to get me through Black Friday. BUT considering the fact that there’s going to be so much great food from which to choose, I can’t very well put on jeans that will cut into my sides halfway through the meal either.

I’ve narrowed it to two options: a faux wrap dress with black textured tights and black suede flat boots or a black jogging suit. Before you go jumping to conclusions, the jogging suit is one of the nice ones – for the love, it’s not velour or Juicy Couture – it’s a knit sweater material. Both are super comfy and of course stylish options. I’ll probably opt for the dress and change into the the jogging suit when I feel the laziness ensue. Besides, I’ll have to stretch out on the floor in the family room this evening to go through all of the sales papers and devise my plan for tomorrow anyway.

With the holiday season upon us, there’s lots of travel ahead. The older I’ve gotten, I’ve become better at not leaving things at home or the places to where I’ve traveled. I’m sure you all are like me and have your must-have items that you can’t leave at home. As I prepare to head out of town, there are always a few things I keep in tow.

I can’t live without my iPod, magazines (Lucky, Glamour, Elle and Allure), Huggies baby wipes (I have a thing about touching germy things) and my green gel eye mask.

As I viewed the the Mz. Wag series of P.R Brown’s work, my thoughts instantly turned to Lady Gaga. I’m pretty sure she’s done something similar already as we can always count on her for insanely creative, often outrageous outfits. Think what you will, but I believe she’s a genius. This post may seem completly random, hence the name “Random Thoughts Of An Artist Mind”, but I believe fashion is inherently inspired by art. Think Rachel Roy’s collaboration with NY Tag Artist SenOne.

Random Thoughts of An Artistic Mind: The Dapper Man

I’m pretty arts and craft-sy. I like to doodle, paint and try DIY projects. I love photography and even took a few classes in college. I come across images from time to time that really move me and I like to make up stories of where I think they people are going, what they do for a living…I even give them names and image what their personalities would be like. I ran across this image via Google and was instantly drawn to it. I randomly Google phrases from time to time to see what types of images I can find. In this particular search, I typed in “dapper man”.

His name is James. He’s a businessman who works for a small firm by day, but he dabbles in jazz by night. He doesn’t smoke, but drinks socially after a set. Maurel, the daughter of a banker, works as a law clerk and models in local commercials. They’re headed out on a Saturday afternoon to hear some of James’ friends play jazz in the park. Let me just say, I am simply in LOVE with their style.

I think it’s about time I get back into photography. *adds really nice, pricey camera to Christmas list*
