New Briefs: Fashion Designer Alexander McQueen Found Dead

Only days before the start of London Fashion week (and on day one of New York Fashion Week), British designer Alexander McQueen was found dead from an apparent suicide. In fact, it was just three years ago that his close friend – credited at helping him become a star - Isabella Blow committed suicide. I was absolutely dumbfounded to learn this news today. McQueen was such an insanely brilliant designer and had so much ahead of him. Even if the name doesn’t ring a bell, you’ve most certainly seen his designs on celebrities over the last several years. McQueen was set to unveil his new collection on March 9th during Paris Fashion Week. The fashion world has indeed lost a great talent. McQueen was 40 years old.

The Big Reveal: Rodarte For Target

I can’t recall the last time I was this excited about the unveiling of a line. Well, to be exact, it was in August when Target announced Anna Sui for Target as a part of the Designer Collaboration series. After months of anticipation and previews of the collection, Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s limited-edition collection for GO International® is ready.

The exclusive collection will launch on Target.com/go and at most Target stores nationwide on December 20th. The collection, affordably priced from $9.99 to $79.99, includes statement-making women’s apparel, belts and legwear. If you see a piece you like, don’t hesitate as the collection will only be available through January 31, 2010. In case you aren’t grasping how huge this collaboration is, think Jimmy Choo for H&M huge, at least from my perspective it is. I’ve salivated over Rodarte designs since I first became acquainted about a year and half ago so the mere thought of an affordable collection makes me ecstatic.

I think Trish Adams, senior vice president, Target said it best. “Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte bring a couture sensibility to the GO International program with an acute eye for detail and appreciation for craftsmanship.”

I plan to lurk around the women’s section of my neighborhood Target on Saturday night with the hope that some of the eager beavers in red shirts put out the pieces early. I have been patiently waiting to see what the collection would offer. I’m most excited by the vintage lace look of the cardigans. In one word – genius!

In spite of major layoffs and an overall bleek feeling about our current economic climate, there’s one positive thing, fashionably speaking of course, in the midst of the recession. Premiere designers left and right are creating new accessible lines. Zac Posen, who’s collection ranges from $900 – $20,000, will unveil Z Spoke in 17 Saks stores and Saks.com this Spring.

The 60 piece Z Spoke collection, considered minimalist and utilitarian will be affordably priced, starting at $78. I can’t think of a better feeling that getting nice high end style at an affordable price. Do you agree?

News Briefs: Brangelina To Design Jewelry Line…For Charity Of Course

As if Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie need to make one more dollar, the superstar actors/humanitarians/super parents/whatever else they’re into these days are adding jewelry designers to their resumes.

Apparetly in between movie roles and taking care of their children, Pitt and Jolie conceived and designed the limited edition collection more than a year ago. The pieces, starting at $525, will go on sale at Asprey stores in London, New York, Beverly Hills, Tokyo and Dubai later this week.

As we already suspected, all net proceeds from sales will go to Education Partnership for Children of Conflict, which was co-founded by Jolie in 2006. The charity raises awareness and funds to educate child victims of war, conflict and natural disasters. I stopped keeping score some time ago with all of the philanthropic deeds these two are raking up, but either way hats off to them both!
