Perfectly Polished: Pretty In Pink With a Little Edge

When I get my nails done recently, I had no clue as to what color I’d choose. Some weeks I know exactly what I want, others, not so much. I was somewhat in a pink/peach mood and after a conversation with one of my favorite nail technicians in the salon, I opted for a China Glaze pink – forgive me because I can’t recall the name of the hue. She suggested I use black for my “accent nails” so this is what we came up with.

I used to be one of those people who would never get designs because I thought it was ghetto but I’m over that now. I’ve decided that it’s all about the nail length. If I had “claws” then I think it would come across a lot differently than it does.

The Scent Of A Woman: Did Your Signature Fragrance Make The Year’s “Best” List?

I was thumbing through one of my fashion magazines over the weekend (I can’t remember which one because I subscribe to quite a few including Lucky, Allure and Glamour), and ran across a list of some of the year’s “best” fragrances. I recently learned that this “best in show” idea is much larger than I initially realized. Every year, The Fragrance Foundation, celebrates the FiFi Awards which are essentially the “Oscars” of the fragrance world. Click here to learn more about the awards.

At least one of my current fragrances, Lola Marc Jacobs, made the list of nominees of fragrance launches that were especially noteworthy. Check out the list of nominees for fragrances sold in specialty and/or department stores.

Perfectly Polished: Out With The Old, In With The Bold

As you all know, I’ve been getting bolder and bolder as the weather warms. I’m pretty much up for any hue on my nails, excluding the really obnoxious neon (non)options. Oh, and I’m also not a fan of long nails, if you haven’t noticed by now. I prefer to keep my nails short and well groomed. I opted for a pinkish purple China Glaze color (I forgot to write down the name of it) and coupled it with my own Sally Hansen Hard As Nails Xtreme Wear Mellow Yellow. My nail designer, Christine, has been dying to put “rhinestones” on my nails for some time and since there were some that matched the polish, I let her do her thing.

Perfectly Polished: What’s Your Spring Hue?

Spring is in full swing – though you can’t quite tell with the less than stellar weather – and everyone seems to be getting in the spirit with brighter nail hues. I’ve been experimenting more and more with color and I must say that I’ve enjoying this “new attitude” I’ve taken on. Gone are the days of a french manicure or a light, pale pink for warmer months. I’ve also rounded up pictures from Sole Intuition readers who are wearing bursts of colors.

Perfectly Polished: Going Nude

I am sitting on the edge of my seat in anticipation of Spring. Spring and Fall are by far my favorite seasons as the scenery is just so beautiful during these times. Plus you don’t have to deal with the weather extremities – it’s not too hot or too cold, weather is nearly perfect. As I mentioned when the Spring 2010 colors were revealed, nude is one of the colors of the season, much like gray was it for Winter 2009. I got a jump start on introducing the color in my palette by opting for a warm nude on both my nails and toes. My signature somehow along the way has become getting my left hand ring finger and right hand index finger in a different hue, so always expect something a little different from me there.

Perfectly Polished: I Was In The Mood For Warm Jewel Tones

I’ve begun to experiment with nail color more and more. Yesterday, I wasn’t in the dark, almost black purple (OPI Siberian Nights or Lincoln Park After Dark) mood. My apologies as I can’t even recall the name of the purple hue. The color on my ring finger, left hand (and index finger, right hand) is called Purple Royal. My signature has becoming always getting a different, but complimentary color on those two fingers. I’ve also started to experiment with designs.

Perfectly Polished: It Smells Like Team Spirit

In honor of the Saints victory over the Indianapolis Colts last night, I’m in an “All Black Everything” mood today. New Orleans is one of my favorite cities and I couldn’t be happier about the win, not just for the team who’d never made it to the Super Bowl before, but for the city as a whole. I was feeling the black and gold spirit all weekend. I opted to even show my team spirit on my nails. My nail tech tried to create the fluer de lis on my nails, but I’m not into such a literal display of support. Nevertheless, check out my black and gold nails. You know I had to add the tiger stripes. I love them.

Last night as I watched my favorite-older-cousin-in-my-head Wendy Williams, she gave the entire audience a bottle of Caress Evenly Gorgeous Exfoliating Body Wash. I’ve been a Caress fan for years and keep a bottle of Tahitian Renewal stashed in my bathroom, but I hadn’t come across the Evenly Gorgeous. Perfectly Polished: What’s Your Winter Nail Color?

Every season one of the conversations the BFF and I have is what colors we’ll be wearing. We’re both pretty basic, but recently I’ve started to venture outside of what I always deemed “appropriate” for corporate America. I’ll probably never wear any neon colors during summer months, but I will continue to mix things up a bit. Around August, if not earlier, I started hearing that the new trend was matte finish. Since I typically apply Sally Hensen Super Shine Shiny Top Coat at least two times between nail salon visits, I’m certain I won’t be trying the Opi Matte line.

This season, there are quite a few different trends, but I always recommend following what works best for you and your lifestyle. For example, if you play sports or workout often and you’re not into getting a regular manicure, stay away from darker hues because once the polish start chipping, it makes your nails look horrible.

The Trends

Matte finish – no shine or shimmer

Dark colors are chic, edgy and are always a winter – black, dark purples, deep reds and blues

Metallic finishes, suede and nude

I am totally digging the OPI Russian Navy and since it comes in a regular finish as well, I think I may try that shade tomorrow. Be sure to comment and let me know you winter nail color picks.

With the holiday season upon us, there’s lots of travel ahead. The older I’ve gotten, I’ve become better at not leaving things at home or the places to where I’ve traveled. I’m sure you all are like me and have your must-have items that you can’t leave at home. As I prepare to head out of town, there are always a few things I keep in tow.

I can’t live without my iPod, magazines (Lucky, Glamour, Elle and Allure), Huggies baby wipes (I have a thing about touching germy things) and my green gel eye mask.

The Shoe Box: Can Retail Branded Magazines Really Be Successful?

So, it looks like more and more retailers are jumping on the “let’s do a magazine – either online or print – to generate more revenue” bandwagon. First eBay launched The Inside Source, which targets fashion forward, trend savvy shoppers who aren’t really into the whole auction “thing”. Since I’m not an eBayer, I’m interested to see where they’re going with this. Only thing is, I can’t say that it would prompt me to purchase anything if I already have a cloudy view of ebay. But who knows.

News broke this week that Forever21 is launching a Fashion/Beauty/Lifestyle Magazine. Their goal in launching the magazine is to reinforce their belief that anyone can achieve a high-end look, no matter what the budget. Sidebar: I think they’ve already achieved this with the Twelve By Twelve brand. I don’t know if it’s the models that put the pieces over the top, but I absolutely LOVE that it. Moral of story – check out Twelve by Twelve.

Each issue of the mag is set to include two or three features, a fashion gallery of looks with styling tips, coverage of trends available at Forever 21, street style, makeup and beauty tutorials, a lifestyle section including the latest in books/art/music, coverage of noteworthy Forever 21 collaborations, and an interview with a notable VIP. Interestingly enough, the seasonal mag, which will be run in print as well as be available online, will be available as a gift with purchase of $40 or more in all Forever 21 stores nationwide. It will also be free to view online at Forever21.com. I must say that the description alone has me intrigued.

The idea of creating retail branded magazines is ingenious, but I’m interested to see how far reaching it will be. I have so many questions. What creative marketing efforts will Forever 21 employ to capture a new audience? After all, they can’t ignore the fact that major, long running publications are folding every day. Conde Nast has put more magazines to bed in the last 2 years than I can remember. Will the publication be considered nothing more than the equivalent of the Elle/Island Def Jam Music Group co-produced mini magazines included with CDs.
